A Quick Guide to What We Know About Relief from Cannabidiol
In case you’ve missed it, CBD is super hot right now. Everyone from celebrities to naturopaths to massage therapists have been singing its praises. Many sufferers of anxiety, epilepsy, PTSD and chronic pain have experienced relief — without the harsh side effects that go hand in hand with pharmaceuticals. Using CBD for pain is easy, effective and relatively inexpensive.
If you’re not familiar with CBD (short for cannabidiol), it’s a cannabinoid found in cannabis. It boasts all the healing powers of cannabis, but it doesn’t share the psychoactive properties of its chemical cousin tetrahydrocannabinol (THC). This means that it’s legal in all U.S. states (though its legality has been questioned a few times) and you can use it to ease your pain without worrying about feeling too chill.
Does CBD Actually Work for Pain?
Show Me the Studies
Using CBD for pain is a relatively new concept for Western medicine.
The good news is that CBD has been used to treat and manage pain for thousands of years. Way before Goop caught on to its benefits, a Chinese civilization called the Sung dynasty was using it — as early as 500 A.D. None other than Emperor Shen Nung himself (aka, the Father of Chinese Medicine) was the first one to document its use. In case you haven’t guessed, Shen Nung was kind of a BFD.
Benefits of Using CBD for Pain
Using CBD for pain has become pretty popular in the past few years. Plenty of celebrities sing its praises and even spas have begun using CBD cannabis oil in their massage oils. In addition to easing your aches and pains, there are several benefits to using CBD for pain instead of OTC and prescription meds including:
- Fewer side effects than pharmaceuticals
- Easy to use
- Low cost
Fewer Side Effects Than Pharmaceuticals
CBD users generally find that they experience fewer side effects when using CBD for pain than with its big pharma competitors. That doesn’t mean there aren’t any side effects at all. Yet, most users find CBD’s side effects much less uncomfortable than that of prescription drugs.
Easy To Use
You can use CBD oil topically or orally — no giant pills or messy injections involved.
Low Cost
A bottle of CBD oil can cost anywhere between $10 and $150, depending on the dosage and size. Compare that to the cost of brand-name pharmaceuticals that could cost thousands of dollars. The bad news? Your insurance probably doesn’t cover CBD — yet.
The downside? Since CBD is so new to the world of Western medicine, there haven’t been enough studies to document its benefits. While the National Center for Biotechnology Information (NCBI) has determined that CBD could very well have pain management benefits, a lot of the proof is anecdotal.
Luckily, you don’t need a prescription for CBD, so you don’t have much to lose if want to give it a try (as long as your doctor gives you the green light go ahead).
What Type of Pain Is CBD Good For?
You can manage most pain with CBD. Everything from stiff muscles to sore joints can benefit from a little CBD. You can take it orally or topically, which means that it’ll either hit your bloodstream or the affected area immediately. Some of the most common pain that CBD oil can treat include:
- Arthritis
- Headaches/migraines
- Back pain
- Fibromyalgia
- Pain associated with cancer and cancer treatments
- Ease withdrawal symptoms during addiction treatment
Many cancer sufferers opt for CBD tinctures (a drop of extract placed under the tongue). If you experience arthritic pain in your hands or knees, you can simply apply a cream directly to those areas. CBD even comes in a topical patch that you can apply to veined areas on your skin.
CBD For Pain: Side Effects
Many CBD users don’t experience side effects when taking CBD — especially compared to the side effects of most prescription and OTC pharmaceuticals. Yet, you should still pay attention to how your body reacts to CBD. Stop taking CBD and contact your doctor if you experience any of the following side effects:
- Anxiety
- Digestive/appetite issues
- Dizziness/drowsiness
- Mood disorders
- Nausea and vomiting
While CBD is relatively new to the Western medical landscape, it’s come in so hard and fast that its benefits are impossible to ignore. With fewer side effects and easy-to-use dosages, we’re not surprised that CBD has become almost as popular as its wild-child sibling, THC.

Experience CBD Treatment Firsthand
Want to learn more about CBD vs THC? While the legality of CBD is hazy in some states, you can travel to Colorado, where CBD is protected under legislation that makes these allowances:
- Colorado allows hemp cultivation for commercial and research purposes to be overseen by the Industrial Hemp Committee under the Department of Agriculture.
- Colorado has established a seed certification program.
- Colorado has established a grant program for state institutions of higher education to research new hemp seed varieties.
This is one of the most liberal policies toward CBD nationwide, making Colorado a mature marketplace for safe, certified, and high-quality CBD products. Colorado has become a destination for relief-seekers who want to learn more about the medicinal side of cannabis, CBD products, and what works for them.
